I became Twitter-holic…

22 09 2009

I know and I apologize, it has been too long since my previous blog post, but I have a good excuse… I became Twitter-holic!

It all started a Thursday morning three weeks ago. One of my daily routine is to check the statistics of my blog. That particular morning, I realized that the most popular post that I have written was the one about Twitter.  To my utter astonishment, 80% of the traffic to that post has been generated by tweets (Twitter posts)!

I could not bury my head in the sand anymore; I had to get on Twitter to find out what was going on out there! If you are not an active Twitter user, you are missing heaps, believe me!

Why did I not use Twitter before?

  • Did not feel like reading about what was my neighbour eating, I thought that  it as a waste of time;
  • Did not know anything about how to write on Twitter… I was kind of scared to have to spend too much time to get to learn some complicated “Twitter language”…

After 3 weeks on Twitter, here are my answers:

  • It is so not a waste of time, as long as you target the right Tweeps (refers to a Twitter user or to its flow of information);
  • The Twitter language is easy! Just few “codes” which are listed further down.

I follow now more than a 1 000 people that I consider worth following, and I am followed by around 800 people! How I did get on Twitter?… Follow me!  :)

Museums, Art Galleries and Web 2.0

1 09 2009

artsharetopTraditionally museums and art galleries around the world have been funded by governments and local authorities. However, in the aftermath of an overall move in corporate management in the 80’s, museums started to expand their revenue streams by acquiring new audiences.  With the emergence of computing and its fast democratisation, art galleries found an opportunity to offer new experiences to their visitors as well as reaching new publics by implementing multimedia systems on the scene.  Lately, Internet as a communication channel has been widely adopted by museums and art galleries as a means to stand out of the competition. When the usual first step of creating a more or less successful website as interface has been taken by the majority, some others used Web 2.0 tools in order to develop much more original and efficient communication and/or vending platforms. SEO vs. PPC: Your visibility on the web matters!

21 08 2009

3657122566_1a7f3f4863It is a matter of fact that a business seeking success in the future has to start with building its online presence today. The internet as a two way communication channel should not be considered as a trump or even as an option anymore, but as a need! Marketers have to dedicate time and efforts to digital communication, and to integrate it as a standard component in their Marketing Mix. Technologies being more accessible and online communications offering broader opportunities than at the time of the Web 1.0 era, the online side of business has become a decisive factor in a competitive market.

Plenty of tools can be used to empower one’s digital image, but it is still critical to know which one should be employed in order to achieve the organisation’s goals. Currently, a heavily discussed topic is the evaluation of the best practice in an online visibility driven orientation. The two main means are the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and the Pay Per Click (PPC).

Research indicates that 60% of users will click on natural search results while only 40% will click on paid. In order to give you a deeper insight on the topic, I will first review the basics of each tool and then try to provide some guidance in your communication strategy.

Business Communication: Facebook Group vs. Facebook Fan Page vs. Facebook Profile

13 08 2009

There is not a day goes by without me reading articles about corporate communication using social media! Viral Marketing on Twitter, Buzz on Facebook… everyone is busy building its digital image. But are these organisations using the right media? For the right purpose? To the right target? This post  is the first of an ongoing series about the use of social media in corporate communication. Through these posts I will try to highlight the pros and the cons of each of the most popular social media platforms.

As you would have guessed when reading this blog title, I will compare today the features of Facebook Groups, Fan Pages and Profiles. Actually, I am already misleading you… Indeed, my intention was to analyse 3202850499_dc120f4829these three branding tools but in the course of my investigations I had to narrow it down to the two first ones. From the start, I found out that it was not worth wasting time on Facebook Profiles. In fact, Facebook Fan Pages present almost the same appearance and features as a Facebook Profile page. But don’t get me wrong! I did not recommend you to not create a Facebook Profile page for your company! The maximum you increase your online visibility, the best business results you will get! However, as I just said, do not put too many efforts into your Facebook Profile. Facebook Profiles have been originally conceived for human beings: Do your company have any siblings? What is your company “Relationship status”?  Is your company “looking for: dating/friendship”? This type of information is totally irrelevant to a business activity! Moreover, your company’s Facebook Profile will be lost in the noise of millions of profile pages and in most cases, consumer behaviour towards a business’ “friend request” will be badly appreciated. Why this blog?

28 07 2009

Hi everyone!

This is my first blog. Amazing!

Indeed, few years back I would have never considered creating my personal blog. Basically, in the old days blogs were mainly used as online diaries by teenagers. At a later time, blogs have been adopted by companies and professionals as a means to communicate with their customers, colleagues and associates or even strangers sharing a common interest.

Then, the image and purpose of blogs evolved and that is why, as nearly graduated student from the QUT Brisbane (Australia), I am now aware that creating my own blog can offer various opportunities to my  career.

First, I consider a blog as a great tool for getting noticed by employers and recruiters, a professional blog is a valuable addition to a job application. The blog goes along with the resume and gives the employers something else than uni projects to look at. It also gives them a pretty clear idea about the blogger’s personality and interests.
